REAL_DEAL project kick-off: enhancing citizen deliberation and participation in a just green transition

February 1, 2022

February 1st 2022 marked the kick-off of a new, exciting project for SOLIDAR!

Titled REAL-DEAL, which stands for ‘Reshaping European Advances towards green Leadership through DEliberative Approaches and Learning’, it is a 3-year project funded by the EU’s Horizon 2020 programme and mainly coordinated by the European Environmental Bureau (EEB) and the Institute for Advanced Sustainability Studies (IASS).

The overall objective of this project is to reshape citizens’ and stakeholders’ active participation and deliberation in the green and just transition by stimulating a pan-European debate involving different stakeholder groups. As one of 16 partner organisations, SOLIDAR will mainly lead the consortium’s work on building collaboration among stakeholders across Europe on deliberation around different areas of the European Green Deal, the strategy to transform the EU into the first climate-neutral region of the world by 2050, and its wider sustainable development objectives.

The project activities led by SOLIDAR in 2022 include:

  • the creation and coordination of a European Civil Society Forum for the Green and Just Transition gathering expertise on the environmental, social, economic and governance dimensions of sustainable development
  • an assessment of the gaps and shortcomings of the EGD, an annual monitoring report outlining the progress made towards the objectives laid out by the EGD and the SDGs, and the production of a policy brief
  • the development of a network of policymakers who support deliberative and participatory democracy around the EGD
