Just Transition, Human Rights and civil society participation: SOLIDAR meets in Guatemala
How can we ensure a just and fair transition in Latin America? How can we learn from indigenous communities? What are the opportunities for civil society and trade unions to provide expertise to the European Union ahead of the upcoming EU-CELAC Summit? These are the key questions that we will discuss in Antigua, Guatemala, from 28 to 30 March during the Regional Exchanged hosted by MPDL and co-organized with SOLIDAR.
From 28 to 30 March, SOLIDAR members active in Latin America are meeting in Antigua, Guatemala, aiming to facilitate an exchange about just transition and human rights in Latin America and the Caribbean. This exchange, led by Movimiento por la Paz in the framework of SOLIDAR’s programme Organising International Solidarity, has also the objective of providing an opportunity for members and partners to identify key messages ahead of the upcoming EU-CELAC Summit and the renew of the partnership between the two regions.
The exchange continues the work carried out in the Latin American seminar on Ecological, Just, Feminist Transition and from the people, which took place in 2021 and also organised by MPDL and SOLIDAR, focused on the discussion about the notion of just transition, the Green Deal and its impacts on the lives of women and the most vulnerable communities in the region. To give continuity to the seminar, during this exchange SOLIDAR network will analyse the causes and socio-political changes that must occur at the local, national, regional and global level.
The latest EU-CELAC Summit was held in 2015 and since that year high-level visits have been scarce, evidence of the stagnation of cooperation initiatives between the two regions. The next EU CELAC summit, taking place in Brussels on 17th and 18th July, represents an opportunity to remodel and strengthen the links between the EU and Latin America and the Caribbean, developing a renewed agenda that contributes to processing the great challenges of the two regions. The inputs from members and partners during the exchange will be included in the SOLIDAR position paper, focused on the renewed partnership and the role of civil society and trade unions with specific recommendations aiming to support the European Union.
