Education Policy Pill: European Year of Skills through a social justice lens
A year ago, at the State of the European Union address (SOTEU), the European Commission proposed to make 2023 the European Year of Skills (EYS). When it was launched, on 9 May 2023, SOLIDAR published its statement, strongly advocating for a shift towards a lifelong and life-wide learning perspective, focusing on key competences and transversal competences to enable active citizenship in a democratic society.
Now, a year after its proposal, it is timely to review the policy developments on the EYS. The European Commission’s proposal has been debated and voted on by the European Parliament and Council of the European Union, bringing their input and thus finalising the proposal. In line with it, the EYS was extended, hence taking place until 8 May 2024.
This Policy Pill is not only presenting, in an interactive way, the proposal and its legislative journey, but also builds upon the bigger picture of policy coherence at the EU level, giving insights into key legislative initiatives for education and learning as well as the European Pillar of Social Rights (EPSR), principles of which the EYS is aligned to. SOLIDAR’s Briefing Paper 105 serves as a basis for this gamified presentation, which also showcases good practices among civil society, such as TRANSVAL-EU and IMAGES projects that acknowledge the importance of skills recognition and validation, and whose results are expected to bear importance in the EYS.
The Policy Pill is embedded in the framework of the work of SOLIDAR on social justice, hence putting forward a social perspective that policy on skills should be founded on, to allow for inclusive and efficient results upon its implementation.
