Hosted by Richard Howitt MEP
Everyone has the individual right to come together with other individuals and collectively express, promote, pursue and defend common interests. In 2012, governments around the world have actively undermined human rights defenders by enforcing severe restrictions on their rights to freedom of peaceful assembly and of association. This encroachment was recognised by the UN Special Rapporteur Maina Kiai in his 2012 report that highlights the need for the International Community to further promote and protect these rights.
SOLIDAR and its member organisations - working to promote social and human rights since 1948 - actively support the call of the UN Rapporteur. Join us for this round table which will bring together human rights defenders from Zimbabwe, Pakistan, Hong Kong and Colombia, and European Union decision makers and stakeholders to debate the topic. This event will furthermore mark the kick-off a SOLIDAR joint cooperation and policy campaign to promote the freedom of association around the world.
